I am an environmental landscape artist working in mixed media. My work focuses on nature’s power to renew itself…and also to renew us. Our health as humans is connected to the health of our natural world. I strive to show the strength and perseverance of nature while questioning the balance of our own presence.
Working intuitively, my landscapes are built from layers of paper and paint that are explored and excavated like the land itself. My work is inspired by the sense of place that stays with you after you’ve left.
I paint on maps and use thick textures and atmospheric layers to capture nature in a state of change. Like roots, roads, or veins of the earth, tiny map lines add pattern, rhythm, energy…and an important layer of symbolism. Only visible when viewed up close, the traces of maps invite deeper exploration. The map symbolizes our connection to the natural environment, a reminder that we are a part of it and responsible for caring for it.
